The 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment traces its lineage to 1791, when it was constituted in the Regular Army as a company of the 1st Infantry. Over the centuries, it has served in nearly every major U.S. conflict, from the War of 1812 and the Mexican-American War to the Civil War, where it fought in the Union Army. The battalion later saw action in the Indian Wars, the Spanish-American War, World War I, and World War II—participating in campaigns across North Africa, Sicily, and Europe. In more recent history, it served in Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Today, the 2nd Battalion, 1st Infantry Regiment is part of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, based at Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Washington, maintaining its role as a modern, highly mobile infantry unit
