The Rakkasans, officially the 187th Infantry Regiment, are a renowned unit of the U.S. Army’s 101st Airborne Division with a legacy dating back to their formation in 1943. They earned the nickname “Rakkasans”—meaning “falling down umbrella men” in Japanese—during the post-WWII occupation of Japan, not during World War II itself. The unit gained distinction for airborne assaults in Korea, notably at Sukchon-Sunchon, and later fought in major campaigns during Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Today, the Rakkasans are recognized as one of the most combat-tested and decorated infantry regiments in modern U.S. military history.
