The U.S. Army Field Artillery traces its origins to the Continental Army in 1775 and developed into a distinct branch responsible for providing indirect fire support using cannons, howitzers, and rocket systems in every major U.S. conflict. The term “Redleg” originated from the 19th century, when artillerymen wore red stripes on their uniform trousers, distinguishing them from other branches. The nickname persisted as a branch identifier and is still used informally to refer to Field Artillery soldiers today.
