VF-45, known as the “Blackbirds,” was a U.S. Navy adversary squadron that provided realistic air-combat training by simulating the tactics and capabilities of potential enemy aircraft. Based at Naval Air Station Key West, Florida, the squadron flew aircraft such as the A-4 Skyhawk and F-5 Tiger II to challenge fleet fighter crews in dissimilar air combat training. VF-45 played an important role in sharpening Navy fighter tactics and readiness before being disestablished in 1996.
