The 555th Parachute Infantry (Triple Nickles).
The 555th Parachute Infantry Battalion, also known as the "Triple Nickles", was the first all-Black paratrooper unit in the United States. The unit was organized in 1943 during World War II and trained at Fort Benning, Georgia. The Triple Nickles were given the dangerous mission of jumping into forests set on fire by the enemy. The unit's nickname came from its numerical designation and the selection of 17 of the original 20-member "colored test platoon" from the 92nd Infantry (Buffalo) Division.
