Task Force Tarawa, built around the 2nd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, was one of the first major Marine formations to enter Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom I. Centered on Regimental Combat Team 2 with attached armor, artillery, reconnaissance, and amphibious assault units, it spearheaded the push along Route 7 during the opening days of the invasion. The task force is best known for its fierce urban fighting in An Nasiriyah, where it secured key bridges, rescued survivors of the 507th Maintenance Company ambush, and fought through coordinated Fedayeen attacks. Its actions during OIF I demonstrated the Marine Corps’ ability to rapidly integrate active-duty, reserve, and supporting elements into a cohesive combat force under intense, complex battlefield conditions.
