In the U.S. Army, a "sapper" refers to a combat engineer, particularly one who specializes in a wide range of construction, demolition, and engineering tasks, usually under combat conditions.  Sappers receive specialized training to handle various types of explosives and demolitions, and they are well-versed in engineering tasks critical to both offensive and defensive military operations. Their name "sapper" comes from the historical use of trench warfare, where sappers would dig trenches or tunnels to approach enemy fortifications, hence the term "sapping." Sappers play a crucial role in supporting infantry and maneuver units by ensuring mobility on the battlefield, as well as by creating or breaching obstacles as necessary during combat operations.
