The 187th Infantry Regiment, known as the "Rakkasans," was originally formed in 1943 and gained its nickname during the post-World War II occupation of Japan, where local interpreters referred to them as "parachute men" or "Rakkasan." The regiment distinguished itself in numerous conflicts, including the Korean War, Vietnam, and more recently, operations in Iraq and Afghanistan. Today, the Rakkasans are part of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault) and are renowned for their expertise in air assault operations and their storied legacy of bravery and excellence in combat.
