Guns A Go Go. In 1966, the Army took four CH-47 Chinook cargo helicopters, bolted on armor, five .50-caliber machine guns, and about 3,000 pounds of ordnance, and sent them to Vietnam as the 53rd Aviation Detachment. Ground troops in contact called them Guns-A-Go-Go, and they were the most heavily armed helicopter gunships of the war. The program ended in 1968, but in 2006 A Company, 4th Battalion, 160th SOAR got the veterans’ blessing to take up the designation, patch, and call sign. Flying the MH-47G, they carry it on today. Vietnam-era firepower with Night Stalker heritage.
