The 2nd Assault Amphibian Battalion was activated in 1942 and earned its lasting moniker, The First Wave, for leading some of the earliest and most dangerous amphibious assaults of World War II, including carrying Marines ashore in the initial wave at Tarawa. The battalion went on to support major operations in Korea and Vietnam, where its amphibious tractors provided critical mobility across hostile coastlines and difficult terrain. During Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm, it delivered mechanized assault support to I Marine Expeditionary Force during the liberation of Kuwait. In the post-9/11 era, the unit deployed repeatedly to Iraq and Afghanistan, continuing its legacy of providing front-line mobility, protection, and firepower for Marine forces.
