The 1st Squadron, 6th Cavalry Regiment traces its lineage to 1861, when it was organized during the Civil War and fought in engagements including the Battle of Gettysburg. In the modern era, the regiment transitioned to an aviation role, deploying as a premier attack helicopter unit in Vietnam, Desert Storm, Iraq, and Afghanistan. After more than 160 years of continuous service, the 6th Cavalry was deactivated in December 2025 — closing the book on one of the Army's most storied cavalry traditions.
