9th Cav Mug

The 9th Cavalry Regiment, formed in 1866, was one of the original Buffalo Soldier units composed of African American soldiers who played a vital role in the Indian Wars, protecting settlers and building infrastructure across the Western frontier. They also served with distinction in the Spanish-American War, the Philippine-American War, and both World Wars, earning a reputation for bravery and professionalism despite enduring systemic racism. During the Vietnam War, the regiment was reactivated as part of the Army’s air cavalry, pioneering helicopter reconnaissance and assault tactics. Today, elements of the 9th Cavalry Regiment are stationed at Fort Cavazos, Texas, where they serve as part of the 1st Cavalry Division, continuing their legacy of excellence.
