The 4th Special Operations Squadron traces its origins to World War II, when it was activated in 1942 as part of the 4th Air Commando Group supporting operations in the China–Burma–India Theater. Reactivated during the Vietnam War, the squadron became known for operating AC-47 “Spooky” and later AC-130 gunships in close air support, interdiction, and armed reconnaissance missions. Today, the unit flies the AC-130J Ghostrider and is based at Hurlburt Field, Florida, under the 1st Special Operations Wing. Its mission is to provide precision strike, close air support, and air interdiction for U.S. Special Operations Command and joint forces worldwide.
