The 3rd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment (3/7) was activated in 1941 and first saw major combat during World War II in the Pacific, including the battles of Guadalcanal and Cape Gloucester. Reactivated for the Korean War, the battalion later served extensively in Vietnam, where it participated in major operations such as Starlite, Harvest Moon, and Hastings. In the decades since, 3/7 has deployed to the Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan, maintaining its reputation as a frontline infantry battalion within the 1st Marine Division.
