The 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion was activated on 4 March 1983 at Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center as 1st Light Armored Vehicle Battalion and was later redesignated as 1st Light Armored Reconnaissance Battalion. Nicknamed the “Highlanders,” the battalion provides armored reconnaissance, security, and rapid mobility support for the 1st Marine Division. The battalion has participated in major operations including the Gulf War, the Iraq War, and the War in Afghanistan, conducting reconnaissance and screening missions in support of Marine Air-Ground Task Forces.
