VFA-125 Rough Raiders was established on 13 November 1980 at Naval Air Station Lemoore, California, as the U.S. Navy’s first Fleet Replacement Squadron for the F/A-18 Hornet, training pilots and maintenance personnel to support fleet assignments. It accumulated tens of thousands of mishap-free flight hours and became a cornerstone of Hornet training before being deactivated on 1 October 2010 when its assets were merged into VFA-122. After a brief period of inactivity, the “Rough Raiders” were reactivated on 12 January 2017 to serve as the West Coast Fleet Replacement Squadron for the F-35C Lightning II, introducing that fifth-generation carrier aircraft to the fleet. Throughout its history, VFA-125 has played a central role in preparing naval aviators and maintainers for cutting-edge strike fighter operations.
