During World War II, the battalion fought with the 2nd Infantry Division in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, and across northwest Europe, helping secure the division’s reputation for toughness and earning the nickname tied to the Marne campaigns. In the decades since, 1-38 Infantry has continued to serve in key Cold War and post-9/11 operations, including deployments to Iraq and Afghanistan, maintaining its legacy as a hard-fighting line infantry battalion.
