The 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (1/9) was an infantry battalion of the United States Marine Corps. Formed during World War I, they served until the mid-2000s. The battalion was deactivated to make room for a light armor reconnaissance battalion. 1/9 had the longest sustained combat period of any Marine unit, 47 months in combat. They had the highest casualty and killed in action rate in Marine Corps history thus earning the nickname "The Walking Dead."
