The 1st Battalion, 9th Marines (“The Walking Dead”) was an infantry battalion of the United States Marine Corps. The battalion was first activated on 20 November 1917 at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Virginia, and later fought in the Pacific Theater during World War II. It earned the nickname “The Walking Dead” during the Vietnam War after suffering heavy casualties while conducting operations near the Vietnamese Demilitarized Zone in 1967.
