The 1st Battalion, 17th Infantry Regiment was first organized in 1861 and saw action during the American Civil War, earning distinction at battles such as Fredericksburg and Gettysburg. It later fought in major campaigns during the Indian Wars, the Philippine–American War, and both World Wars. During the Korean War, the battalion played a key role in the Battle of Inchon and operations near the Chosin Reservoir. Today, the 1-17th Infantry Regiment is part of the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, stationed at Joint Base Lewis–McChord, Washington.
