The 1st Battalion, 509th Infantry Regiment traces its lineage to World War II airborne units and is best known by the nickname “Geronimo.” During the Vietnam War era, elements of the 509th Infantry served in Southeast Asia, earning a reputation for toughness and airborne proficiency. In the post–Cold War period, the 1-509th became widely recognized as a premier Opposing Force (OPFOR) unit at the Joint Readiness Training Center, where it trains and challenges deploying U.S. Army brigades under realistic combat conditions.
