The US Army's 5th Special Forces Group (Airborne), also known as the “Legion,” was activated on September 21, 1961, at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. The unit gained fame during the Vietnam War for its counterinsurgency operations and later participated in major conflicts such as Operation Desert Storm, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation Iraqi Freedom. Its soldiers specialize in unconventional warfare, counterterrorism, and foreign internal defense. The 5th SFG is currently headquartered at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.
