The 1st Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment "Manchu" has a rich legacy of combat service, including key operations during the Iraq War. From August 2004 to July 2005, C Company’s 1st and 2nd Platoons took part in the initial assaults of the Second Battle of Fallujah (Operation Phantom Fury), one of the fiercest urban battles of the conflict. After returning to Fort Carson, Colorado, the battalion underwent major restructuring, transferring personnel to the newly activated 3rd Squadron, 61st Cavalry Regiment and absorbing troops from the 1st Battalion, 503rd Infantry. In a second deployment to Iraq during Operation Iraqi Freedom 06–08, the Manchus played a pivotal role in defeating insurgent forces in Ramadi during Operation Murfreesboro before reflagging as the 1st Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment.
