The 57th Medical Detachment (Helicopter Ambulance), known as “The Original Dustoff,” was activated in 1962 and deployed to Vietnam as the U.S. Army’s first dedicated aeromedical evacuation unit. It pioneered the use of the “Dustoff” call sign and conducted thousands of MEDEVAC missions during the Vietnam War, establishing the standard for rapid helicopter evacuation under fire. The unit remained active through subsequent conflicts before being inactivated on 15 June 2007, with its mission continued by other Army MEDEVAC units.
