2nd Battalion, 8th Marines was activated in 1940 and fought in World War II, including campaigns in the Pacific such as Guadalcanal, Tarawa, Saipan, Tinian, and Okinawa. After the war, the battalion served in later conflicts and operations including Lebanon, Grenada, the Persian Gulf War, Iraq, and Afghanistan. Based at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, 2/8 is part of the 8th Marine Regiment and has historically served as an infantry battalion within the 2nd Marine Division.
