The 1st Special Forces Group (Airborne) traces its lineage to the World War II First Special Service Force, an elite U.S.-Canadian unit activated in 1942 and reconstituted as 1st SFG in 1957 for operations in the Pacific. During combat in Italy, the unit earned the “Black Devils” moniker after conducting night raids with blackened faces, as described in German reports. Today, 1st SFG (A) remains forward-deployed in the Indo-Pacific, with operational history including Vietnam, Afghanistan, and other global missions.
