Nimrod Burke was a Civil War soldier, scout, and noncommissioned officer who served with the 23rd United States Colored Troops. Born in Virginia around 1836, he escaped to Ohio, learned to read and write, served initially as a teamster and scout, and later fought in campaigns including the Battle of the Crater before mustering out in 1865.
