The U.S. Army Armor School was established in 1940 at Fort Knox, Kentucky, to train soldiers in armored warfare as tanks became a dominant force in modern combat. In 2011, it was relocated to Fort Moore, Georgia, as part of the Army’s Base Realignment and Closure (BRAC) process, merging with the Infantry School under the Maneuver Center of Excellence. The school’s mission is to develop skilled armor and cavalry leaders, focusing on combined arms operations, reconnaissance, and mechanized warfare. Through rigorous training and education, it ensures that the Armor Branch remains a decisive force on the battlefield, capable of operating in complex and evolving combat environments.
