The U.S. Navy’s First Fleet was originally established in 1947 as a major Pacific command headquartered in San Diego, responsible for training and readiness along the West Coast during the early Cold War. In 1973, it was redesignated as the United States Third Fleet as part of a broader Navy reorganization, effectively ending the First Fleet designation. In 2021, the Navy announced plans to reestablish the First Fleet to strengthen U.S. presence in the Indo-Pacific, signaling a renewed strategic focus on the region.
