Formed in 1866 as one of the original African American “Buffalo Soldier” regiments, the U.S. Army’s 9th Cavalry earned distinction on the western frontier during the Indian Wars. Its lineage spans service from the Philippine-American War and World War II to Vietnam and modern operations including Desert Storm, Enduring Freedom, and Iraqi Freedom. Today, the 9th Cavalry legacy lives on in active cavalry and aviation units across the Army.
