The 3rd Tank Battalion was activated in 1942 and served as the armored battalion of the 1st Marine Division, providing heavy firepower in support of Marine infantry operations. The battalion fought in the Pacific during World War II and later saw extensive combat service in the Vietnam War. In the modern era, 3rd Tanks deployed to the Middle East, participating in Operations Desert Shield/Desert Storm and later in the 2003 invasion of Iraq. As part of the Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030 restructuring, the battalion was deactivated in 2021, marking the end of Marine Corps tank units.
