The 1st Battalion, 3rd Marines (1/3), known as the "Lava Dogs," was activated in 1942 and fought with distinction in World War II, Vietnam, Iraq, and Afghanistan. The unit earned a reputation for toughness and combat excellence across generations, serving as a key infantry battalion within the 3rd Marine Division. On June 23–24, 2022, 1/3 was deactivated and redesignated as the **3rd Littoral Combat Team**, becoming part of the newly formed **3rd Marine Littoral Regiment** under the Marine Corps’ Force Design 2030 initiative. While the historic 1/3 name was retired, its legacy continues through this modern, forward-deployed unit based at Marine Corps Base Hawaii.
